Why Saturday was Alabama football's best day of the year
Alabama dominated LSU in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, but that wasn't all the Crimson Tide and their fans celebrated.
Three moments Saturday combined to make it arguably the best single day of the year for theUniversity of Alabama football program.
Trevon Diggs, rated the No. 6 athlete in high school football by 247Sports, verbally commits to the Crimson Tide. Diggs, from Avalon School in Maryland, is the younger brother of former University of Maryland current Minnesota Vikings rookie Stefon Diggs.
Arkansas converts a lateral in overtime and then gets a two-point conversion run from quarterback Brandon Allen to beat Mississippi, 53-52.
Why should that make Alabama so happy? Because it cost Mississippi sole possession of first place in the SEC West. And the Rebels still have to face LSU and Mississippi State in the regular season.
Alabama caps a 13-play, 78-yard drive against LSU in the victory formation. The win vaults the Crimson Tide into the role of SEC West favorite and likely propels running back Derrick Henry, who rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns, into the Heisman Trophy finalist picture.
Alabama, which entered the game at No. 4 in the College Football Playoff selection committee ranking, figures to be no worse than No. 2 when the second rankings are released Tuesday night.
