Brie Larson wins Best Actress - Drama at Golden Globes

Brie Larson won the Best Actress in a Drama award at Sunday’s Golden Globes for her role in Room, a film about a mother and her young son (Jacob Tremblay) living in captivity and then adjusting to the outside world after their escape.

“This movie means so much to me and so I need to start at the beginning with Emma Donoghue, who wrote the novel that inspired all of this,” Larson said in her speech before going on to thank Room director Lenny Abrahamson and costar Jacob Tremblay. 

Backstage, Larson shared that Tremblay “tackled” her after the win and guessed that he’ll probably celebrate by dancing. “Knowing him, he’s probably in a throng of Johnny Depp and Will Smith and Amy Schumer, like, starting a conga line somewhere,” she said. “So I should probably get back to that.”

Although this marks Larson’s first Golden Globe nomination and win, she’s no stranger to critical acclaim: EW has called her turn as a supervisor at a home for teens in 2013’s Short Term 12 as “what emotionally naked acting is all about” and “so affecting.” 

“She can go very deep into character but with this amazing lightness of foot,” Abrahamson previously told EW. “And a lack of that showy intensity which is sometimes mistaken for great acting.”

Aside from Room, Larson also appeared in Amy Schumer’sTrainwreck in 2015 and is starring in the upcoming Kong: Skull Island,the latest addition to the King Kong franchise.
